Zincalume is a BlueScope Steel product consisting of high-strength steel coated with a zinc-aluminium-silicon alloy (55% aluminium, 43.5% zinc, 1.5% silicon). This alloy coating provides corrosion resistance that significantly outperforms traditional galvanised steel in most environments. The coating works through a combination of barrier protection and sacrificial protection: the aluminium provides a dense, adherent barrier against moisture, while the zinc provides sacrificial protection that actively prevents corrosion from spreading if the coating is scratched or cut. Zincalume has been manufactured in Australia since 1976 and has an extensive, well-documented performance record in Queensland’s climate.
What Is Colorbond Steel?
Colorbond is Zincalume steel with an additional factory-applied multi-layer paint system on top. The paint system consists of a primer layer applied over the Zincalume substrate, a backing coat on the reverse side, and a topcoat in one of the available Colorbond colours. The topcoat is a high-performance polyester or polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) paint system that is UV-stabilised, designed to resist chalking and fading in Australian conditions, and carries a specific warranty against defects from BlueScope.
